Prototyping Support

As part of my PhD, we have developed design tools and a framework to structure the prototyping process.

Design by Prototyping Toolbox

Prototyping toolbox
The Design by Prototyping toolbox contains different design support tools that can be used individually or together to support the prototyping process.

Design by Prototyping Framework

Prototyping framework
The Design by Prototyping framework describes how the tools in the toolbox can be integrated in an Agile or Agile-Stage-Gate Hybrid model.

Prototyping Planner

The Prototyping Planner is a 1-page template, which helps you scope your prototyping activity and plan how to build and test a prototype.

It consists of four steps: 1) THINK helps your define the purpose of your prototype, 2) BUILD helps you to determine what and how to build a prototype, 3) TEST asks you to make a testing plan, and 4) ACT helps you identify insights from the prototype test and plan next steps.

Prototyping Target

The Prototyping Target is a 1-page template that supports teams in determine a focus for their prototyping activities.

It consists of four steps: 1) Identify the most critial questions about your product or idea within the three areas feasibiliy, desirability, and viability. 2) Prioritise the identified questions by placing them on the Prototyping Target template, and 3) Select the question(s) to answer in the next sprint with the next prototype.

ProtoMap

ProtoMapping is a visualisation method that can be used both the understand and learn from previous procesesses but can also support decision-making in concurrent activities.

Design by Prototyping Framework

The framework describes how prototyping sprints can be used to increase the agility of hardware product development. With this, the development team should make prototypes to answer the most critical questions in the product development process - continously from idea to release.
